DID YOU KNOW that in addition to the myriad adverse effects Splenda (sucralose) has to offer, a new study shows that it damages DNA? Researchers publishing in Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part B found that sucralose causes DNA to break apart, putting people at risk for disease. They also linked sucralose to leaky gut syndrome, which means the lining of the intestines are worn down and become permeable. I encourage you to look at your labels. If you see sucralose in the ingredients, throw it away. Here are other names for artificial sweeteners that if in your food, beverages, or anything you put into your mouth, throw away:

  • Acesulfame potassium (Sweet One, Sunett)

  • Advantame

  • Allulose (Swerve)

  • Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal)

  • Erythritol

  • Neotame (Newtame)

  • Saccharin (Sweet’N Low)

  • Sucralose (Splenda)

Better Bone Habits

Steve: We're always looking for ways to maintain bone quality and quantity. The following provides more evidence. Nutrient Intake The synergistic effect between nutrients have been shown to be associated with changes in bone mineral density (BMD). A Nutrients study aimed identified nutrient patterns (NP) associated with BMD categories in postmenopausal women for at least 12 months. One NP was characterized by vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, phosphorus, riboflavin, protein (animal), vitamin B6, potassium, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, cholesterol, beta carotene, omega 3, magnesium, zinc, niacin, and selenium. The lower consumption of this NP compared with other NPs by postmenopausal women was associated with a higher risk of osteopenia. Optimal Protein Intake Published in Clinical Nutrition, a 25 grams/day increment of dietary protein intake was associated with a 14% lower risk of hip fracture in female participants. In particular, risk of hip fracture in underweight participants was 45% lower for every 25 grams/day protein consumed. Eat Your Good Fats Results of a two studies from Frontiers of Nutrition show consumption of monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, and omega-3 fats such as fish, are highly beneficial for bone density in adults. Eat Wide Variety of Fruit and Vegetable Colors In a study from Nutrients, the phytochemical index (PI) was calculated to reflect the intake levels of phytochemical-rich foods. Postmenopausal women in the highest PI group had a 16% lower risk of osteoporosis compared to those in the lowest group, suggesting a tangible, protective effect. Air Pollution With the wildfires affecting a large swath of the US, this is prescient. A study from The Lancet eClinicalMedicine is the first to explore the connection between air pollution and bone mineral density specifically in postmenopausal women, and the first to explore the effects of air pollution mixtures on bone outcomes. The results were not positive. Findings confirm that poor air quality may be a risk factor for bone loss, independent of socioeconomic or demographic factors. Nitrogen oxides, in particular, are a major contributor to bone damage and that the lumbar spine is one of the most susceptible sites of this damage. Another reason to have a HEPA filter in your domicile.
