Bonnie Solves Eating Confusion Bowl-Style | We the Organic People

From eNewsletter 3/6/2019

DID YOU KNOW that among elderly cancer patients, low pre-diagnosis vitamin D3 levels (30 or less) were associated with increased overall mortality? The study, from this month's Cancer, Causes, and Control, states that among patients surviving more than 2 years after cancer diagnosis, higher pre-diagnosis vitamin D3 levels (70 or more) were associated with lower risk of overall and cancer-specific mortality.

WE THE ORGANIC PEOPLE

Bonnie & Steve: Previous studies indicate that eating organic can reduce urinary pesticide metabolite excretion. Former studies have largely focused on organophosphate (OP) pesticides. Knowledge gaps exist regarding the impact of an organic diet on exposure to other pesticides, including pyrethroids (insecticides) and neonicotinoids (nicotine-derived insecticides), which are increasing in use in the United States and globally.

A study in the upcoming April issue of Environmental Research investigated the impact of an organic diet intervention on levels of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides or their metabolites in urine collected from adults and children.

Researchers collected urine samples from four racially and geographically diverse families in the United States before and after an organic diet intervention.

They observed significant reductions in urinary levels of thirteen pesticide metabolites and parent compounds representing organophosphates, neonicotinoid, and pyrethroid insecticides and the herbicide 2,4-D following the introduction of an organic diet.

In conclusion, this study adds to a growing body of literature indicating that an organic diet may reduce exposure to a range of pesticides in children and adults.

Additional research is still needed, but the fact that these chemicals are confirmed to be carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting, it would behoove each and every one of us to eat organic whenever possible.

You are not only helping yourself, but eating for the greater good. The more we eat organic, the further prices will fall, eventually putting organic on a level playing field with conventional.
