DID YOU KNOW that a new study from Nutrients found a large number of adverse health events in children and adolescents younger than 18 years of age associated with energy drink consumption? Of those adverse events, 45% affected the cardiovascular system, 33% the neuropsychological system, and 22% other organ systems. In 33% of cases, additional triggers were reported. The authors state that to prevent adverse health events in the future, children and adolescents should be informed about risk factors and responsible consumption behaviors.

It's in the Water Steve: There's been a heightened focus on our water supply in recent weeks. Most highlighted has been polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or "forever chemicals". The substances stay in the environment long after their intended use and have been associated with long-term illnesses including cancer and other health problems. They are praised by some for their use in nonstick cookware and waterproof or stain-resistant products. Others fear them for their potential toxicity. 3M is among the world's largest manufacturers of PFAS, and just agreed to pay up to $10.3 billion over a 13-year period to public water suppliers that have detected the substances in drinking water across the nation. The company plans to exit all PFAS manufacturing by the end of 2025. Avoiding PFAS in Water Soon after the 3M settlement, a study released by the well respected Environmental Working Group found that luckily, your standard carbon water filter (like Brita or Pur), and reverse osmosis filter, remove PFAS from the water. Needed more convincing to filter your water? A JAMA Network Open study found exposure to higher concentrations of fluoride in water and having higher plasma levels of fluoride were associated with a greater risk of dental fluorosis.
