DID YOU KNOW that a recent study in the rigorous journal Food and Chemical Toxicity evaluated the efficacy and safety of the oral probiotic strain streptococcus salivarius? This is the oral probiotic strain we have recommended for years to not only to balance the mouth microbiome, but protect your teeth from gingivitis, as well as fight bacterial and viral invaders that gain access through the nose and mouth. The researchers found the strain not only to be safe, but highly efficacious.

PUBLIC HEALTH ALERTS Steve and Bonnie: It has been several months since we alerted you about major public health developments that weren't related to COVID-19. Numerous recent developments deems it necessary. New Obesity Injection Drug Approved Wegovy by Novo Nordisk, a once per week injection, was recently approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for weight loss. It is a new version of an insulin-free popular diabetes medication. The average 15% weight loss is largely the result of feeling fuller faster during meals. Of course, the FDA and drug manufacturers state that the medication is not effective unless exercise, a healthy diet and other steps like keeping a food diary are adhered to as well. In our opinion, Wegovy is not worth the side effects, which commonly include gastrointestinal problems, including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Wegovy also has a risk of depression and pancreas inflammation. More ominously, it carries a potential risk for a type of thyroid tumor, so it shouldn’t be taken by people with a personal or family history of certain thyroid and endocrine tumors. New Alzheimer's IV Infusion Approved All you have to know is that two members of the safety panel who voted to give their blessing to the FDA to approve this medication stepped down from their posts in protest. Even the FDA said the clinical results were mixed. Biogen's Aduhelm IV infusion works by removing sticky deposits of a protein called amyloid beta from the brains of patients in earlier stages of Alzheimer's in order to stave off its ravages. It is not a cure and simply hopes to slow the disease's progression. Do not go near this medication for at least five years as brain microhemorrhages, superficial siderosis, headache, diarrhea, confusion and disorientation, increased fall risk, hypersensitivity, among others. Gummy Quality Questioned We waited a long time for a quality gummy supplier as most failed our quality checks. We are very particular and had to drop Hero Yummi Bears specifically for this reason. Major gummy brand Vitafusion just had a major gummy recall of seven different products. We are thankful that Pure Encapsulations introduced their gummy line because the steps they take to ensure safety and quality control are impeccable. Age for Colorectal Cancer Screening Dropped to 45 The US Preventive Services Task Force just recommended that colorectal screening begin at age 45 instead of 50. It is important to note that in the 76 to 85 age group, they found no tangible benefit for screening. Cologuard and FIT at-home fecal tests are the perfect choice to avoid the cost and potential harm of colonoscopy. Unnecessary Surgery We found it very weird to read this sentence in a just-published study from Annals of Surgery: "considerations for deimplementation of low-value surgical practices." A surgery journal telling surgeons to stop performing surgeries? The study is basically admonishing surgeons for performing surgeries that do not create enough quality of life value. Several examples they cited were contralateral prophylactic mastectomy for average-risk women with unilateral breast cancer, and knee arthroscopy for osteoarthritis, meniscal tears, and knee pain. Teen Tanning Bed Use A ban on the use of tanning beds by minors aged 14-17 years in the United States would prevent over 15,000 cases of melanoma and cost less than other, well-established public health interventions, according to a microsimulation in Cancer. Compared with no ban, such an intervention could save over $205 million in lifetime health care costs among the 17.1 million young people who would be affected. New Oral Contraception Pill Approved The FAD has approved a new estrogen for the first time in more than 50 years. The novel combined oral contraceptive, marketed as Nextstellis, contains 3 mg drospirenone and 14.2 mg of estetrol in tablet form. Estetrol is an estrogen that is naturally produced during pregnancy, but will now be produced from a plant source. Don't be confused by the fact that the estrogen source comes from plants. The way it is processed still deems it a synthetic estrogen. So this pill most likely will not be any better than its predecessors.
