Feeling foggy, drained, or suddenly desperate for something sweet? Your diet may be part of the story. While we've known this for a while, physicians are increasingly paying attention to everyday symptoms like cravings, low energy, poor sleep, and trouble concentrating, because these often point to a nutritional gap or to a diet heavy in ultra-processed foods and refined carbs.
According to a recent Medscape article (which caters to physicians and nurses), these processed, low-protein, low-fiber foods can send blood sugar on a rollercoaster, leaving you tired and reaching for more sugar. The article goes on to mention that sugar cravings often ease when you cut back on refined sugar and get enough protein, fiber, and key nutrients like B vitamins, magnesium, and iron. Fatigue and weakness can trace back to low iron, B12, vitamin D, or magnesium, or simply not eating enough. Brain fog may reflect low B12 (common in people taking metformin or acid-reducing medications, or eating vegetarian or vegan diets), iron, or folate. Low mood has been linked to shortfalls in folate, B12, vitamin D, and omega-3s, while poor sleep may involve too little magnesium.
The article concludes by suggesting that seeing health professionals like ourselves can help correct these nutrient deficiencies :)
