Steve: Titanium dioxide, the ubiquitous whitening agent, has been used for decades in food and non-food objects. There are two forms: regular titanium dioxide and nanoparticle titanium dioxide.
We are vehemently against the use of nanoparticle titanium dioxide in all products. Even sunscreens that contain it are dangerous because it is so small it can get beyond the dermal layers and into cells around the body.
Until recently, our opinion on regular titanium dioxide was agnostic. The safety data is now questionable enough that we are recommending against ingesting foods and supplements with titanium dioxide unless no other alternative exists. Regular titanium dioxide is still okay topically in sunscreens and body care products.
We found ourselves in a quandary with Ecological Formulas Vitamin C 1000 because it contains titanium dioxide. There are literally only two non-corn-based vitamin C supplement options on the market. The alternative is a cumbersome tablet and expensive. Luckily, the issue has been resolved. After constantly badgering the powers that be at Ecological Formulas, I can happily say that they have removed the titanium dioxide going forward :)
