DID YOU KNOW that if you currently have, or have a history of high blood pressure, one alcoholic drink daily is not a great idea?

According to a new study from Hypertension, compared with nondrinkers, systolic blood pressure (BP) was 1.25 mm Hg higher in adults who consumed one serving of alcohol per day, rising to 4.90 mm Hg in adults consuming an average of 4 servings alcohol per day.

Diastolic BP (DBP) was 1.14 mm Hg higher in adults who consumed one serving of alcohol per day, rising to 3.10 mm Hg in those who consumed an average of 4 servings of alcohol per day.

Based on the results, the authors state: "the lower the better, and no consumption even better, as we did not find any indication that human health may benefit from consumption of very small amounts of alcohol".

Healthy Fertility, Pregnancy, and Nursing Update

Steve: Nothing is more important than giving our children the best chance to succeed in al facets of life. Starting before conception, there are many steps that can be taken to optimize your children's outcomes.

Fertility

Taking folic acid supplements before conception and in the first trimester of pregnancy continues to be a major line of defense against neural tube defects. In a statement published in JAMA, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommended that all people planning on becoming pregnant or who could become pregnant take a daily supplement of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects.

Infertility treatments may increase the risk for hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke among new mothers by 66%, according to new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Pregnancy

In utero exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has been tied to reduced brain volume in children, results of a large population-based study in JAMA Psychiatry show.

Maternal structured lifestyle interventions during pregnancy based on a Mediterranean diet significantly improved child neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 2 years, as shown in JAMA Network Open.

A study in American Journal of Preventive Medicine found prenatal iron supplementation adjusted to the maternal hemoglobin levels and baseline iron stores improves cognitive functioning in children aged 4 years.

Phthalates, ubiquitous chemicals in the environment, may be associated with postpartum depression and every effort should be made to avoid them as much as possible, according to a study from JAMA Psychiatry.

Nursing

According to researchers in Archives of Disease in Childhood, children who were breastfed for longer durations were more likely to achieve higher academic results at age 16 compared to their non-breastfed peers.

Among nearly 10 million US infants born between 2016 and 2018, breastfed babies were 33% less likely to die during the post-perinatal period (day 7-364) than infants who were not breastfed, reports a new study from American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

According to a study in Frontiers in Nutrition, contaminants can be transferred to breast milk and are delivered during breastfeeding. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals and indirect food additives may induce tissue inflammation and polarize lymphocytes, increase proinflammatory cytokines, promote allergic sensitization, and microbial dysbiosis, activate nuclear receptors and increase the incidence of allergic, autoimmune, and metabolic diseases. This is why it is critical for the mother to eat a healthy diet while breastfeeding.

Among fathers who wanted their infant's mother to breastfeed, 95% reported breastfeeding initiation and 78% reported breastfeeding at eight weeks. This is significantly higher than the rates reported by fathers who had no opinion or did not want their infant's mother to breastfeed - 69% of these fathers reported breastfeeding initiation and 33% reported breastfeeding at eight weeks, as reported in Pediatrics.

DID YOU KNOW that a new study in Nature confirmed what we have been telling our clients with long COVID for several years now?

Whether long COVID occurred from the infection itself and/or vaccine, many with long COVID suffer because of the reactivation of latent viruses including Epstein-Barr, mononucleosis, and herpes.

This reactivation compounds and overwhelms the immune system, leading to dysfunction and many of the symptoms long COVID patients suffer with.

Healthy Lifestyle Prevents Depression

Steve: When I meet with clients, why do I aim to optimize all aspects of a healthy lifestyle?

A global study from The Lancet Psychiatry, led Harvard Medical School, has found one in two people will develop a mental health disorder by the age of 75.

The 3 most common mental health disorders among women:

  • Depression

  • Specific phobia (a disabling anxiety that interferes with daily life)

  • Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)

The 3 most common mental health disorders among men:

  • Alcohol abuse

  • Depression

  • Specific phobia

Mental health disorders typically first emerge in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood.

The good news is that a healthy lifestyle that involves mild or no alcohol consumption, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, healthy sleep and frequent social connection, while avoiding smoking and too much sedentary behavior, significantly reduces the risk of depression, according to new research in Nature Mental Health.

The researchers made this deduction after looking at diet and lifestyle factors, genetics, brain structure, and our immune and metabolic systems to identify the underlying mechanisms that might explain this link. Sound familiar?

In other news, a new study from JAMA Network Open linked artificial sweeteners to increased depression risk.

Oral contraceptive use has been linked to increased depression risk, especially within the first 2 years following initiation, according to a study in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences.

A study from Nutrients showed that especially among those aged 29-39 years, vitamin D supplementation tended to show a lower rate of depression.

DID YOU KNOW that although some hearing loss is considered normal as we age, levels of hearing loss in the US are expected to double in the coming years?

An interesting new study from PLOS Biology has identified that reduced levels of cholesterol affects the ability of the outer hair cells in the ears to amplify sounds.

When supplementing with plant-based sterols (phytosterols) that improved levels of cholesterol, hearing improved. Given that many people are now prescribed statins to reduce their cholesterol levels to lower levels than ever, it may be that the statins are also impacting their hearing. More research on this issue to come.

ALERT: Why purchase high quality supplements like Pure Encapsulations and Metagenics through a licensed reseller and not Amazon? A man was arrested last week for selling $130,000 of counterfeit Pure Encapsulations supplements!

Great Meals Junky Snacks?

Steve: A study just published in European Journal of Nutrition reminds of us of something that we do not discuss with you as much as we should. The benefits of healthy meals can be derailed by consuming unhealthy and unbalanced snacks.

Snacking is not unhealthy, as long as the snacks are healthy. People who eat high-quality snacks like nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables, and lean protein are more likely to have a healthy weight.

A quarter of the participants in this study reported eating healthy main meals and poor-quality snacks, which were associated with leaving them feeling hungrier, higher visceral fat mass, and higher triglycerides concentrations, all of which are associated with metabolic disease such as stroke, cardiovascular disease and obesity.

The average daily snack intake in the subjects who snacked was 2.28 snacks, with 47% of people eating two snacks a day and 29% of people eating more than two.

The most popular snacks consumed were cookies, fruit, nuts and seeds, cheese and butter, cakes and pies and granola or granola bars. The greatest contribution to calorie intake were cakes and pies, granola and granola bars, ice cream and frozen dairy desserts, donuts and pastries, candy, cookies and brownies.

The timing of the snacking can also be crucial. Snacking between dinner and bedtime was associated with poorer blood markers compared to all other snacking times. Snackers at this time tended to eat foods higher in fat and sugar.

The best advice we can give regarding snacks is if you eat them, never eat a carbohydrate alone. If you have a piece of fruit or vegetable, balance it with lean protein (hard boiled egg) or healthy fat (6-8 nuts). Try to avoid grains and especially sugar of any kind as snacks.
