DID YOU KNOW that a study from Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that a supplement containing caffeine and L-theanine improved cognitive performance in athletes performing sports that require focus as well as aerobic activity (i.e. biathlon)?

The combination of caffeine and L-theanine in supplement form is being more frequently used not just for sport, but for those who do not want to use stimulant medication to enhance focus. Note: this can only be used for persons who have gone through puberty.

DID YOU KNOW that a study from Frontiers in Nutrition suggests there is a new postbiotic that targets obesity and glucose control called Akkermansia muciniphila?

The authors also suggest that those with dermatitis and asthma exhibit low levels of gut-derived Akkermansia muciniphila and could benefit from supplementation.

This strain should never be taken unless you are working with a knowledgable health professional. Please direct any questions to Steve at his direct email address.

Editor's Note: In last week's issue, there was a study cited using 100-140 mg. of zinc for lowering cholesterol. Please do not self-supplement with this dosage. The study was in a controlled environment, took into account total zinc intake on a daily basis, and was performed for only a finite amount of time.

DID YOU KNOW that there was good and bad news about coffee and weight in a new study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition?

The good news is that each 1 cup per day increment in unsweetened caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee (max 4 cups) was associated with a reduction in weight gain over four years.

The bad news is that adding as little as one teaspoon of sugar to your total coffee intake was associated with weight gain over a four year span.

Yet another reminder that we prefer you drink your coffee black. Moreover, using artificial sweeteners is just as bad as sugar.
