DID YOU KNOW that a slew of new studies were published regarding screen time?

  • According to a University of Michigan poll, two-thirds of parents are worried about children's increased time on devices, including overall screen time and use of social media, taking the No.1 and No.2 spots on the list of children's health concerns this year.

  • Greater screen time for children aged 1 year was associated with developmental delays in communication and problem-solving at ages 2 and 4 years, according to JAMA Pediatrics.

  • Researchers publishing in Medrxiv found higher odds of psychiatric diagnoses among adolescents with the most time spent across all screen-based behaviors. Minimum time spent on gaming was also associated with lower odds of psychiatric diagnoses.

Exposing infants to screen time seems detrimental. While screen time for adolescents is often necessary for school, there can be a happy medium. Screen time for school-related purposes should always come first. Then, screen time for pleasure should be kept to a finite window of time. Finally, the most important thing is to be consistent regulating allowed screen time.

Two Ways to Prevent Pre-Autoimmunity

Steve: Over the next decade, you will be hearing the term pre-autoimmunity a lot more. It is critical that health professionals pay attention to this because if left unchecked, pre-autoimmunity becomes autoimmunity.


Pre-autoimmunity can smolder under the surface and appear way before special autoimmune titers are out of medical range. At this time, the only way to assess pre-autoimmunity is to look at specific factors in routine blood work, as well as sign and symptom questionnaires. We have experience with this.

Why is it so important to treat the pre-autoimmunity stage? Once you develop an autoimmune disorder, it is a long slog to remission, if it is even possible. In the majority of cases, it becomes more about managing symptoms than remission.


Here are two very important tips to prevent pre-autoimmunity.

  • If we learned anything from COVID-19, it is critical to implement supportive, targeted nutrients and therapies at the first sign of infection of any kind. Once the initial infection is neutralized, to minimize the chance of lingering immune hyperexcitability, and possibly reactivating latent viruses (Epstein-Barr, herpes, shignles), there are other nutrients and therapies to make sure your immune system calms down. Our Infection Protocol covers this very well.

  • Have your health professional assess what substances you consume, drink, put on your skin, and breathe into your lungs on a daily basis to make sure that your immune system does not treat them as foreign invaders. When your immune system is activated day after day and has no chance to rest, it can become dysfunctional, hyperexcited, and will eventually attack your own tissues, hence autoimmunity.

DID YOU KNOW that a study in PLOS One has demonstrated a correlation between vitamin D levels and C-reactive protein (CRP, an indicator of inflammation)?

CRP is a blood measure of inflammation in the body. High levels can indicate infection and acute inflammation. Constant inflammation leads to a slow accumulation of damage and is a major risk factor for many of the chronic diseases of aging including cardiovascular disease, mental health decline, diabetes, among others. Anything that can help lower CRP levels in the blood has a positive impact on chronic disease prevention.

The study found that deficient vitamin D status was associated with significantly higher CRP levels, while sufficient vitamin D status reduced the risk of a high CRP.

The findings remained even after adjusting for other factors such as physical activity, smoking and alcohol, obesity, educational level, kidney function, biological sex, and age.

Support Your Skin

Steve: Why does skin get leathery? Think about the farmers, road crews and others who work long hours outdoors, or someone who spends too much time in tanning booths, or too much time on the beach during the summer. Surprisingly, very little research has been done to explain why this happens on a biological level, until now.

A study from the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials discovered how ultraviolet radiation can alter the microstructure of human skin. Particularly affected is collagen, the fibrous protein that binds together tissue, tendon, cartilage and bone throughout our bodies. Optimizing protein intake and even consuming collagen powder can combat this to a degree.

Red Light Therapy

Dermatologists are starting to come around to using red light therapy in a clinical setting for skin conditions such as acne and aging skin, promote hair follicle rejuvenation, and even help with wound healing. It is safe as long as you cover your eyes and work with a dermatologist.

Fruit and Fruit Extracts

Consuming fruit or administering fruit extracts on the skin significantly enhances skin hydration and reduces transcutaneous water loss, according to new research in Frontiers of Nutrition.

Psoriasis

Vitamin D deficiency or lower vitamin D levels are associated with a significant increase in the severity of psoriasis, according to research presented at the 2023 American Society of Nutrition annual meeting.

Eye Solutions

Contact dermatitis remains the most common cause of eyelid and periorbital dermatitis. Ophthalmic solutions used in the treatment of ophthalmic conditions can often be the cause. A study in Dermatitis urges users to try different brands, especially the most hypoallergenic, if they show reactivity.

DID YOU KNOW that a new study in BMJ Medicine found that calorie-free caffeine can reduce body fat and type 2 diabetes risk because of its thermogenesis effect?

The reason the researchers were so insistent on referring to calorie-free caffeine is that when caffeine beverages were accompanied with milk, alternative milk, or caloric sweetener, there was no thermogenesis benefit.

Other recommendation from this study:

  1. If you have a genetic predisposition for caffeine intolerance, the results do not apply to you because you should be avoiding caffeine as much as possible.

  2. This study was not just about coffee. Other calorie-free caffeinated beverages apply.

  3. If you cannot tolerate coffee because of GERD or a digestive disorder, you can get still get caffeine from yerba mate, tea and caffeinated water.

Stress in Men and Women Differ

Steve: A new study from Cell Reports discovered that a subcategory of brain cells responds to stress in a totally different manner in males and females. One deduction made from this study is that men are more vulnerable to chronic stress than women.

Believe it or not, this is a first-of-its-kind study, which is incredible when you think about it. The findings will lead to a better understanding of health conditions affected by chronic stress, such as anxiety, depression and even obesity and diabetes, and will pave the way toward more personalized therapies.

Another study from Cell Reports found that when you're under stress, your brain may release its own cannabinoid (CBD) molecules to calm you, activating the same brain receptors as THC derived from cannabis plants. A key emotional brain center, the amygdala, releases cannabinoid molecules under stress that dampen the incoming stress alarm from the hippocampus, a memory and emotion center in the brain.

For those under constant "fight or flight" stress, there is no endless supply of your own cannabinoids, which is why some find supplemental CBD as helpful for anxiety and stress.
