Yerba Mate Concerns?

From eNewsletter 10/17/2022

DID YOU KNOW that an editorial in last week's JAMA Internal Medicine extolled our sentiments about statins for the last several decades? The piece was called "Statins for Primary Cardiovascular Disease Prevention: Time to Curb Our Enthusiasm". Here is the concluding statement:

"In the US, about $25 billion is spent annually on statins. Cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality are the upshot of myriad social determinants. Although statins lower LDL cholesterol in individuals, investments at the community level to construct a more salubrious environment that enables healthy eating and promotes physical activity are likely to have more widespread multiplicative and pleiotropic effects on the biological and psychosocial risks of CVD, as well as on improving quality of life. The 2022 USPSTF recommendations are an opportunity to pause and refocus efforts to meaningfully improve CVD outcomes for all, rather than extol the marginal, likely small, and uncertain absolute benefits of statins for the few in primary CVD prevention".

Yerba Mate Cancer Concerns

Steve: I have received numerous inquiries regarding the connection between yerba mate tea and the increased risk of oral and oro-pharyngeal cancer. As is common when reading things on the internet, you must always look first to the research or refer to professionals such as ourselves before drawing conclusions.

The cancer connection has nothing to do with the properties of yerba mate. Every major study from PubMed cites the same reason. It has to do with drinking very hot beverages. The same cancer connection would be true for very hot coffee, or very hot tea, or very hot water. Very hot beverages can subtly (or not so subtly) burn your mouth and esophagus, which ups cancer risk on the areas it affects.

The key takeaway is to let your very hot beverages cool down to hot status before drinking. In addition, always consume organic yerba mate, coffee, and tea whenever possible. Then, your cancer risk is eliminated.

Research about yerba mate with regard to cancer prevention was positive for breast, colorectal, and prostate. Not to mention its DNA repair and oxidative stress prevention capacity, as well as positive effects on LDL cholesterol function, food cravings, blood sugar balance, and has antibacterial activity.
