Bullish on Fruit and Veggies | Sleepy Teens

From eNewsletter 1/6/2020

DID YOU KNOW that supermarkets are choosing fruit and vegetables for healthy growth? Produce sales increased by over $1 billion in 2019, and big players in the grocery industry are expanding their produce sections in response. The move is also an effort to bolster faltering inner aisle sales (think processed foods such as cereal and canned soup).

The more fresh fruit and vegetables that are available to us is a good thing!

We hope you had a happy New Year and here's to a successful 2020 and decade!

LIFE EXPECTANCY STUDY

Bonnie and Steve: In November of 2019, a troubling study in JAMA reported that while life expectancy in the US increased for most of the past 60 years, there was a decline from 2014 to 2017. Data on 2018 and 2019 have yet to be tabulated.

The decline in life expectancy was due to increases in midlife mortality across all racial groups, caused by drug overdoses, alcohol abuse, suicides, and a diverse list of organ system diseases.

As the richest nation in the world, and one that spends the most on health care, the fact that we are not trending towards longer life expectancy is astonishing.
