DID YOU KNOW that a study from Frontiers in Nutrition found Lactobacillus Acidophilus (L. Acidophilus) significantly enhanced intestinal peristalsis, thus helping those with slow transit constipation (STC)?
STC is a chronic disease characterized by delayed intestinal transit and weakened spontaneous contractions of colonic smooth muscle. Specifically, they found L. Acidophilus promoted the same areas where gut serotonin is produced.
Of course L. Acidophilus is not a panacea, but certainly can be used as part of a combination therapy so you don't have to rely on laxatives. As we have seen time and again, once you are on laxatives long-term, your ability to perform peristalsis wanes and sometimes never comes back.
