Motivation Nourishment | Reduce Anxiety Med-Free

From eNewsletter 11/30/2022

DID YOU KNOW that according to results of a first-of-its-kind study in JAMA Psychiatry, a guided mindfulness-based stress reduction program was as effective as the gold-standard antidepressant drug escitalopram (Lexapro) for patients with anxiety disorders? While for most it is easier to medicate anxiety, the added benefits of mindfulness therapy besides the anxiety itself are copious. It also has no side effects. This should encourage those to incorporate mindfulness or similar technique whenever possible.

Nutrition Linked to Motivation

Steve: We all want to be motivated in all aspects of life. While becoming motivated is a difficult step, it is even harder to stay motivated. In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers in eLife found that oxidative stress can have a negative effect on brain chemistry, and thus, play a major role regulating functions like reward, reinforcement, aversion, and not least, motivation. What Is Oxidative Stress Oxidative stress is the inability to remove "waste" from certain metabolic functions in the body. As our cells "eat" various molecules for fuel and when we breathe oxygen, we create toxic metabolites that need to be removed. However, if we have certain genetic mutations that retard our ability to detoxify these toxic waste products, or there are simply too many that we cannot remove them fast enough, oxidative stress may occur. Oxidative stress can limit motivation because it can make us feel foggy and/or fatigued, which certainly is not conducive to feeling motivated. Nutrition and Dietary Supplements As the study researchers found, the glutathione pathway is the most important to rid ourselves of toxic waste products. One way to assure this pathway is working properly is to find out if you have a genetic mutation of the glutathione pathway (our Pure Genomics wellness screening tests this gene, called GSTP). There are also specific foods (cruciferous vegetables and animal protein) and supplements (N-acetyl-cysteine, glutathione, to name a few) that can help this pathway work optimally. We caution you about taking N-acetyl-cysteine or glutathione unless you screen first for the glutathione genetic pathway. There is a delicate balance between removing toxic waste products at the right pace and too fast a pace. We have seen cases of individuals who become pro-oxidative, which can be as harmful as being oxidative deficient. Boosting our motivation by addressing oxidative stress is a step that can be easily attained. Consequently, there are many other benefits beyond motivation by optimizing oxidative function.
